The Evolution of the Lounge

 28th September 2015: The Lounge

The lounge is done!  So pleased with the eclectic vibe that it has - a fusion of wood/gold and cream that is warm and inviting!  Just have to replace the curtain rails which have decided they have had it!

19th November 2014
A momentous day where our electrician came in to connect the electricity up in the lounge.  FINALLY!  The chandelier newly checked, cleaned and buffed looks sparkling with its new candle light bulbs!

The room has acted as our garage for the last year or so - therefore the last task to do is to empty the room of the tools, paint and gib board out! Give it a good dust and vacuum; pop a bottle of champagne and celebrate the completion of this our third renovated room.

Our thanks go to Alice and Pierre from France for painting the ceilings and walls of our lounge!  They did an amazing job!

You need to zoom in to see the tiny bay trees!!  The larger ones at the garden shhop were too tall and spindly and we want to promote good bushy trees to make a hedge - so have to wait!! :)

Walls:  Resene Quarter Parchment
Ceiling:  Resene Alabaster

12 April 2014
Time for plastering finally.  Les put in some hard labour getting this done for us at his usual high quality! :)

21st January 2014
Herb did another 4.5 hours putting up  nogs around the perimeter of the room today -  making the ceiling really strong and ready for gib fixing. I took LOTS of photos because a lot of money was spent for something that we won't see once the gib goes up - scary!  But now we will have a level ceiling!!  :)

18th January 2014
Mark the contractor couldn't do the job and passed it on to a builder he knows called Herb.  We took the risk as we just want the darn job done and Herb came. So far he is amazing and knows his stuff and has done a great job so far. He pointed out the lean in the ceiling and how it would affect the skirting - so has has levelled it - at a cost of $400 and a further $300 for tanilised timber  (pink) and nails (one day of labour).  So $700 for a level ceiling...goodness, gulp and lets get some pictures in this blog so we can see the money spent here at least and move on!!  Feels good to know the job is getting done properly though...

27th December 2013
Delays, delays, delays - we were promised by one contractor to have the fixing done in the September holidays.  He didn't bother calling or letting us know he didn't want the job - rude....  The lounge is still not gib fixed...  We have another contractor called Mark (recommended by the tradesman Jason Cameron) who says he can do the job in January...we will see..can't wait to get this room finally finished...

4th October 2013:
Glen has bit the bullet and got over his hate of itchy scratchy insulation. Donning all the 'protective gear he could' he put the pink and green (not itchy) batts in the exterior walls of the lounge.  It makes such a difference to the warmth of the room already.  He also taped up the gap between floor and wall which stops the air from whistling up!

The lounge has always been cold - at least a couple of degrees colder than the rest of the house.  Once we started stripping it down we realised why.  Again the cover was only the thin hardboard and cold air from under the house was roaring up the walls as it wasn't insulated.

The ceiling wiring.

The hardboard being stripped revealing the boards which served as wall linings in the old days!

The boards - with the wind whistling through

Glen the Worker!
Tom, our electrician has come in and added another plug to the wall beside the fire - so that we can have the TV cords hidden! He has also checked every outlet in the house to see that it is safe.  He  also kindly fixed the plug in the piano room - which was dangling with loose wires exposed - very dangerous!
